Making Sense of Suicide: Introducing the Integrated Model of Suicide Risk
Monday 7 September 2026
7pm BST (UK & Ireland) | 2pm Eastern | 11am Pacific
90 minutes | Online | Free
Hosted by Dr Sue Egan and Mike Davidson, Directors of Suicide Grief Support CIC
Please read the following information before registering for this webinar.
It explains why we are holding the session, what taking part involves, possible emotional risks, how we will use your feedback, how the webinar will be recorded and how your personal information will be handled.
1. Why are we holding this webinar?
Suicide is complex and rarely has a single cause or explanation.
For people bereaved by suicide, however, the search for an explanation can become an important part of trying to make sense of what has happened.
Questions such as Why did they do it?, Why didn’t I see it?, What did I miss? and Could I have prevented it? can become intertwined with grief, guilt and feelings of responsibility.
Suicide Grief Support CIC is developing a new Integrated Model of Suicide Risk which brings together different factors that may contribute to suicide vulnerability and risk.
We hope that looking at these different influences together may provide people bereaved by suicide with a framework through which they can explore the complexity surrounding their loved one’s death.
We are now asking people with lived experience of suicide bereavement to help us evaluate and develop the model.
2. What is the model intended to do?
The Integrated Model of Suicide Risk is a conceptual framework.
It is intended to help people understand how multiple influences can potentially interact in the development of suicide risk.
It cannot tell us precisely why a particular individual died by suicide.
It cannot establish whether someone’s death could have been prevented.
It should not be used to retrospectively diagnose a person who has died or determine responsibility for their death.
The model is still being developed, which is why your feedback is important.
3. Why have I been invited?
The webinar is open to adults who have lost someone they love to suicide.
You do not need any professional or academic knowledge of suicide, psychology or mental health.
We are particularly interested in your perspective as someone with lived experience of suicide bereavement.
4. What will taking part involve?
The webinar will last approximately 90 minutes and will take place online.
Dr Sue Egan and Mike Davidson will introduce the Integrated Model of Suicide Risk and explain its different elements.
You will have opportunities to reflect on the framework and, if you wish, contribute comments during the webinar.
Following the session, you will also be invited to complete a feedback form.
The feedback form will ask about your experience of seeing and using the model and whether you believe it could be improved.
5. Do I have to talk about my loved one?
No.
You are not required to tell us or other participants about the person who died or the circumstances surrounding their death.
You can attend simply to listen.
You can choose not to answer a question, not to participate in a discussion, turn your camera off, take a break or leave the webinar at any time.
You do not have to give a reason.
We ask everyone attending to be mindful that other participants may be at very different stages of their grief.
6. Could taking part be upsetting?
Possibly.
The webinar discusses suicide, suicide risk, psychological distress and suicide bereavement.
The model may also encourage you to think about different circumstances or experiences in your loved one’s life.
This could bring up difficult memories, emotions, unanswered questions, guilt, sadness, anger or regret.
Please consider whether this feels like an appropriate time for you to participate.
You remain in control of your participation throughout the webinar and can step away or leave at any time.
We will provide information about sources of further support.
7. Is this therapy?
No.
This webinar is not individual or group therapy and is not a substitute for psychological, psychiatric or medical care.
Although psychological concepts will be discussed, the facilitators will not assess or diagnose individual participants or people who have died.
The webinar is also not intended to determine whether an individual’s suicide could have been predicted or prevented.
8. Is this research?
The webinar is currently being undertaken as consultation and feedback to inform the development of the Integrated Model of Suicide Risk rather than as a formal research study.
The purpose of collecting feedback is to understand how people with lived experience respond to the model and how the model might be improved.
Participation in this consultation does not automatically provide consent for your identifiable personal information, story or contribution to be used in future research.
If we later wish to undertake formal research involving participants or their information, the appropriate ethical and governance requirements will be considered separately.
9. How will feedback be collected?
Feedback may be collected in two ways:
During the webinar:
You may choose to contribute comments, questions or reflections.
Following the webinar:
You will be invited to complete a feedback form.
We may bring together feedback from participants to identify common themes, areas of concern and suggestions for improving the model.
You are not required to answer every question.
10. How will my feedback be used?
Your feedback will be used to help us develop and refine the Integrated Model of Suicide Risk.
We may subsequently describe the overall consultation process when discussing or presenting the development of the model.
For example, we may report that people with lived experience were consulted or describe broad themes arising from the consultation.
We will not publicly identify you as the source of a particular personal experience or quotation without obtaining your explicit permission.
Where possible, feedback used to inform development of the model will be separated from information that directly identifies individual participants.
11. Will the webinar be recorded?
Yes. The webinar will be recorded.
Recording a session involving suicide bereavement requires particular care because participants may disclose sensitive personal information.
Before the webinar begins, we will remind everyone that recording is taking place.
Depending upon your Zoom settings and how you participate, your name, image, voice or comments may potentially appear in the recording.
You do not have to have your camera switched on.
If you do not wish your name to be visible, we will provide information about changing the display name shown within the webinar.
The recording is being made to help us to record feedback. Only Dr Sue Egan and Mike Davidson will have access to the recording and it will be deleted within one year of the webinar.
The recording will never be shared or published however a photo will be taken of the webinar for media purposes.
No participant should make their own recording, screenshot or photograph of the webinar.
12. Confidentiality within the group
We ask everyone attending to respect the privacy of other participants.
Anything another participant shares about themselves or the person they have lost should be treated as confidential and should not be repeated outside the webinar.
However, because this is an online group involving members of the public, Suicide Grief Support CIC cannot guarantee that every participant will maintain confidentiality.
We therefore encourage you to share only information that you are comfortable sharing in a group environment.
Where possible, please attend from a private location and consider using headphones if other people are nearby.
13. Are there limits to confidentiality?
Yes.
There may be exceptional circumstances where information shared with us raises a serious safeguarding concern.
If we believe there is an immediate or serious risk of harm to you or another person, or information is disclosed that requires safeguarding action, we may need to take reasonable steps in accordance with our safeguarding responsibilities.
Where it is appropriate and safe to do so, we would aim to discuss this with you.
14. What personal information will you collect?
Depending on how you register and participate, we may collect information including:
-
your name;
-
email address;
-
webinar registration details;
-
information submitted through the feedback form;
-
comments or questions you voluntarily contribute;

information contained within the webinar recording; and
-
other personal information you voluntarily choose to disclose.

15. How will my information be protected?
Suicide Grief Support CIC will handle personal information in accordance with applicable UK data-protection legislation, including the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
Access to identifiable information will be restricted to those who need access for legitimate purposes connected with administration, safeguarding, consultation or development of the model.

Further details about how Suicide Grief Support CIC processes personal information, including your data-protection rights, can be found in our:
16. How long will you keep my information?
We will retain personal information only for as long as it is necessary for the purposes for which it was collected.
We will keep your email address and full name indefinitely as part of our privacy policy until you decide to opt-out.
Any feedback taken will be held for three years whilst the model is being tested and published.
Information that has been fully anonymised so that it can no longer reasonably be linked to an individual may be retained as part of the ongoing development history of the model.
17. Can I withdraw?
You are free to withdraw from the webinar at any time.
You can also choose not to complete the feedback form.
The extent to which previously submitted feedback can subsequently be withdrawn will depend upon whether it can still be identified as yours.
Once feedback has been fully anonymised and combined with feedback from other participants, it may no longer be possible to identify and remove an individual’s contribution.
We will explain any applicable withdrawal period on the feedback form.
