Grief is not just an emotion. It is a full nervous Grief is not just an emotion.
It is a full nervous system response.
When someone you love dies, your brain is not only processing loss - it is trying to make sense of a reality that no longer matches what it has learned.
From a neuroscience perspective, attachment is deeply wired into the brain. The person you lost is encoded into your daily patterns, your sense of safety, and your internal map of the world. When they are suddenly gone, your system does not immediately update.
This is why grief can feel so disorienting.
Your amygdala (which processes threat and emotional significance) becomes more active. Your body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, keeping you in a heightened state of alert.
At the same time, areas of the brain linked to attachment and reward - including the pathways studied in research by Mary-Frances O'Connor - continue to “search” for that person.
Your brain expects them to return.
Your body reacts to their absence as a form of threat.
This is why grief is not just sadness. It can show up as:
Physical pain or tightness in the chest
Fatigue and exhaustion
Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
Anxiety or panic
Numbness or disconnection
Research also shows that prolonged stress responses during grief can impact the immune system and cardiovascular health (see studies on bereavement and inflammation).
Grief is not something you simply “move on” from.
It is something your nervous system slowly learns to carry.
Understanding this does not take the pain away -
but it can remove the self-blame.
Nothing about this response is wrong.
Your body is doing exactly what it was designed to do in the face of loss.

Grief isn’t always obvious - but there are subtl Grief isn’t always obvious - but there are subtle signs someone has lost a loved one. From emotional spikes to fatigue, concentration struggles, and needing space, these changes are normal ways our minds and bodies process loss.
If this resonates, know you’re not alone. Support networks, retreats, and understanding spaces can help you navigate grief safely; especially after suicide loss. 💛

Last week, I joined the The @thejeremyvine Jeremy Last week, I joined the The @thejeremyvine Jeremy Vine Show on @bbcradio2 to talk about something many people don’t expect in grief work - singing.
If you didn’t catch the conversation, you can listen via the link in our bio.
We spoke about the retreat, why we use singing as part of the process, and the impact it can have on the nervous system when words aren’t enough.
Grief doesn’t only sit in the mind - it lives in the body.
Sometimes, voice is one of the first ways it begins to move.
If this resonates, there is only 1 place left on the upcoming retreat.

There are only a few spaces left for our April ret There are only a few spaces left for our April retreat.
On the 17th, a small group of women will come together for five days to gently begin processing the trauma of suicide loss - supported by evidence-based approaches like EMDR, alongside practices such as yoga, sound, and creative work.
This is a quiet, held space to take time for yourself, in the company of others who understand.
If you’re wondering whether this could be right for you, we’re here to have a conversation.
Currently 10% discount to claim the final 3 spots - our gift to you 💛

Some stories take time to reach an ending we can l Some stories take time to reach an ending we can live with.
Mine was my travels through Bali on my own last year and healing through self care.
I’ve been slowly writing my journey into a book to help others - a psychological reflection on my experiences of supporting my son, losing my brother, and everything that came with it.
It’s not a guide, and it’s not a set of answers. More a space for my professional and personal to merge and explore the complexity of co-dependency, grief, and finding a way through, in my own way.
Sharing this feels important now as the book is edited and comes to a full conclusion 💛
