A recent phenomenological analysis of intensive EMDR for PTSD (Butler & Ramsey-Wade, 2024) interviewed clients who described profound shifts in just a few days. Central to their experience were psychological safety – feeling held in a protected space with ongoing connection – and a changing sense of self, including “wow moments” of insight and finally living more authentically. Though the work is emotionally demanding, many reported faster reduction in symptoms, better engagement, and a deep sense of relief and transformation. These findings guide how we design these intensives: safe container and support all woven together so you can begin changing, even in grief’s intensity.

“I was like I can go 100% today, you know. I can go 100%… …because I know that I’m going to come back tomorrow, and I can finish this. But if I was doing it weekly, I would go in and maybe give 30% because I knew that if I did 100%, I would have a really bad week until the next session”

Why Your Nervous System Is Still in Shock After Suicide Loss (Even Years Later)

What Is an EMDR Intensive?

This is a 3-day, online or in-person therapeutic experience, facilitated by Dr. Sue Egan, a specialist in suicide grief, trauma therapy & EMDR. The intensive includes a combination of:

  • EMDR sessions for yourself or each family member.
  • Psychoeducation coaching on trauma, suicide grief, and emotional regulation.
  • Grounding and co-regulation techniques to take home and continue the healing.
  • Facilitated family dialogues (if necessary) to open communication and reduce conflict or misunderstanding.

Each programme is tailored to your unique needs, relationships, and history.

When suicide touches you and your family, the shock, silence, and sorrow often ripple through every relationship.

Each member carries their own version of the story, often isolated in their pain.

While traditional talk therapy can help, it may feel too slow or disconnected when you are struggling to function – or to speak the unspeakable.

Our EMDR Intensive Weekends offer a deep, immersive healing experience designed specifically for individuals or their families affected by suicide loss.

Held online or in peaceful, supportive settings, these days provide a safe and structured space to begin processing the trauma – giving you space to heal at your own pace.

Why This Matters

When individuals or families grieve in silence or conflict, trauma can deepen over time. With focused support in a safe, structured setting, healing becomes possible – whether for one person or the whole family.

This time is a dedicated space to process grief, reconnect where it’s needed, and move forward with greater understanding, compassion, and emotional clarity.

These EMDR intensive weekends are designed for individuals or families grieving the suicide of a loved one. They may be particularly helpful for:

  • Individuals seeking focused support to process their grief and trauma.

  • Parents and teens navigating the same loss from different perspectives.

  • Families with children who need age-appropriate emotional support.

  • Adult siblings or extended family members processing shared grief.

While many individuals and families benefit from this work, not everyone is suitable for an EMDR intensive. Your emotional safety is our top priority. We require a pre-assessment consultation to discuss your situation and determine the most appropriate approach.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. For families affected by suicide, EMDR can reduce flashbacks, guilt, numbness, anxiety, and unresolved trauma — allowing space for the natural mourning process to unfold. Although there is no magic fixes, EMDR gives your body time and space to heal what has happened and research has proven it can make a difference to all types of traumatic experiences.

We also use play-based EMDR with children to support them through creative, non-verbal expression.

We typically work with small dyads or triads at a time (e.g., parent/teen, couple, or parent/child) to ensure emotional safety and space for deep work. However, larger family units can be accommodated through a carefully structured schedule with time for both joint and individual sessions.

We’ll discuss what’s best for your unique family in our pre-assessment consultation.

That’s okay. Children often express grief differently — through play, behaviour, or silence. Our approach respects their pace and uses play therapy, art, and gentle relational techniques to create emotional safety.

It’s deep, but never forceful. The intensive format allows for more focused healing in a supportive and attuned environment. We move at a pace that respects each participant’s nervous system, and sessions are always trauma-informed and developmentally appropriate.

Most intensives run for 3 consecutive days, customised to yourself or family. A typical day includes:

  • Individual EMDR sessions for each participant
  • Dyadic or family sessions
  • Rest and integration time
  • Grounding work
  • Psychoeducation around grief, trauma and how children and teenagers may react.

Not at all. Some people come after years of therapy, others are new to this kind of work. We’ll meet you wherever you are – with compassion and clarity. We will

Our intensives are held in peaceful, private therapeutic spaces across the UK or online, designed to feel safe, calm, and comfortable which we will discuss on our planning call.

It starts with a minute consulation where we will:

    1. Explore you or your family’s needs.
    2. Assess your suitability for EMDR Intensives.

Following this, if we decide this is the best thing for you or your family, we will plan the sessions.

We may ask you to complete numerous forms before our sessions begin.
