A New Chapter in Suicide Grief Support - Introducing Our Groundbreaking EMDR-Integrated Retreats

There are moments in the evolution of suicide bereavement support where something new becomes not just helpful, but necessary.

At Suicide Grief Support, we are proud to be launching a series of specialist retreats created exclusively for women bereaved by suicide. These retreats mark a significant step forward in how suicide-related grief can be supported, thoughtfully, safely, and with clinical depth.

Most significantly, our April retreat will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world to formally integrate EMDR therapy within a dedicated retreat setting for suicide bereavement.

This is not simply a retreat. It is the beginning of a new model of care.

Why We Are Starting These Retreats Now

Suicide grief is unique. It often carries trauma responses alongside profound loss , shock, intrusive imagery, unanswered questions, guilt, stigma, and a nervous system that feels permanently unsettled.

Traditional talking therapies can be invaluable. Suicide support groups offer connection. Yet many women find that elements of their grief remain “stuck”, particularly when trauma responses are involved.

As a Counselling Psychologist and EMDR specialist, Dr Sue Egan has long recognised the gap between trauma-informed therapy and immersive healing environments. While EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is well-established as an evidence-based treatment for trauma, it has rarely been integrated into retreat spaces specifically designed for suicide bereavement.

Until now.

These retreats have been created to bridge that gap , combining structured, clinically grounded EMDR-informed work with carefully held retreat practices that regulate the nervous system and support emotional processing.

What Makes the April Retreat Unique

The April retreat represents a world-first: the integration of EMDR within a dedicated suicide grief retreat environment.

This matters because suicide loss frequently includes traumatic elements. The mind may understand what has happened, but the body can remain in survival mode.

By embedding EMDR principles into the retreat framework, participants are supported not only to reflect, but to gently process. The structure allows for:

  • Trauma-informed EMDR-integrated sessions
  • Small, clinically facilitated groups
  • Somatic and nervous-system regulation practices
  • Carefully paced therapeutic work
  • Restorative space and containment

Everything is grounded in safety, consent, and professional oversight. This is not an intensive therapy bootcamp. It is a carefully designed therapeutic container that honours both science and compassion.

Launching this model now reflects an increasing understanding that suicide bereavement requires specialised, trauma-aware care, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

A Thoughtfully Designed Environment

These retreats are intentionally small. Emotional safety is prioritised. The environment is calm, contained, and structured to reduce overwhelm.

The integration of EMDR does not mean participants are pushed beyond readiness. All elements are invitational and professionally guided. Choice remains central throughout.

By bringing together clinical expertise and retreat practices, we are creating a space where both trauma and grief can be acknowledged, without stigma, without pressure, and without minimising the complexity of suicide loss.

Beginning a New Era of Suicide Bereavement Care

Starting these retreats represents a milestone, not just for Suicide Grief Support, but for the wider field of suicide bereavement care.

It reflects a commitment to innovation grounded in evidence.
It reflects listening to what women bereaved by suicide have needed but not always found.
And it reflects a belief that trauma-informed, psychologically robust retreat work can deepen the healing process in ways traditional formats alone may not.

The April retreat marks the beginning.
